Converting a tablet into a digital photo frame
Now that I've acquired a Kobo to serve as my ebook reader, my previous reading device - a 10" tablet running ChromeOS - is free to take on a new task. I decided to convert the tablet into a digital photo frame running a slideshow of images.
One of my requirements was that a folder on the tablet's local storage would serve as the photo source for the slideshow. Perhaps there was some flaw in my search fu skills, but finding the right slideshow app proved surprisingly more difficult than expected. Suggestions were focused on using slideshow apps that relied on cloud-based services like Google Photos, Dropbox, etc. as the photo source.
Finally I discovered Aged Cheese. This app has proven perfect at doing one thing very well: randomize and display photos from a dedicated folder stored on the tablet as a slideshow, minus any ad-encrusted cruft.
Ultimately I settled on:
- Create a
photo_album
folder on my desktop - Use Syncthing to sync photos from desktop to home server to tablet
- Run Aged Cheese on the tablet to display a randomized slideshow of photos
Working good!
